Guinea-Bissau Independence Day
Guinea-Bissau was once part of the Kabu kingdom, as well as part of the Mali empire. Parts of the kingdom lasted until the 18th century, while the Portuguese Empire ruled from the 16th century onwards. In the 19th century, it was colonized as Portuguese Guiana. After independence, proclaimed in 1973 and recognized in 1974, the capital, Bissau, was added to the country’s name to avoid confusion with Guyana (former French Guinea).
